Its mid-September, so holidays are coming soon. Hario will have a break next week for Silver Week. It’s not actually a week, but the combination of two holidays, Old People’s Day and the Autumnal Equinox. The term comes from the fact that Golden Week comes earlier in the year, and it’s also a reference to the “silver” hair of our elders. Old People’s Day is next Monday, September 18th. It falls on the third Monday of September, as part of the “Happy Mondays” system made up by the government to have long weekends throughout the year. 

This gives people more time to travel and visit relatives. Japan has one of the oldest populations in the world, so it’s important to have a day to commemorate elders. Back when this day began in the 1960’s, people who turned 100 years old received a commemorative silver sake cup from the government to celebrate their centenary. In 1963, 153 people received one. In 2014, the number was 29,357! The Japanese government can’t afford to send silver cups to so many people. The cost of these cups was $2 million last year. They are considering changing the material of the cups or just sending a congratulatory letter from now on. The government expects that, by 2018, the country will have around 39,000 centenarians! It goes to show how far health and medicine has come in recent times. 50 years ago, living to 100 years old was barely imaginable. Now it’s becoming more and more common. I wonder what peoples life expectancy will be like 50 years from now! Here’s to a long and happy life for everyone.

みなさん、こんにちは。

もう９月も半ばとなりました。来週は、敬老の日と秋分の日がありシルバーウィークといわれていますが、HARIOは来週一週間は休校となります。敬老の日は、ハッピーマンデー制度に基づき、９月の第三月曜日（９月１８日）です。

日本は、世界の中でも高齢者の方が多い国といわれていますから、「敬老の日」は年長者の方を敬う、日本にとって大切な記念日ですね。これは、１９６０年代に始まり、１００才になると政府から銀杯が贈呈されていました。１９６３年には、１５３人の方が贈呈されたそうです。２０１４年になり、その数は、２万９３５７人となりました。日本の政府は、経費削減のため、銀からメッキに変えざるおえなくなりました。２０１８年までには、１００才以上のお年寄りが３万９千人になると予想しています。これはここ数年で医療技術がそれだけ進歩したということを表しています。５０年前は、１００才まで生きるということは、非常に稀なことでした。でも今は、普通なことになりつつあります。５０年後は、平均寿命といのはどれぐらいになっているのでしょうか。
