Hello everyone,

How are you? Tomorrow is the start of June? Time flies, doesn’t it! This weekend is the next round of Eiken tests. Good luck to all of our students taking part. They have been updated a little and now there is a writing section in the 3rd and pre-2nd grade tests, as well as the 2nd grade. I know you’ve all been studying hard, so I hope you get a good result.

みなさん、こんにちは。

　いかがお過ごしですか。明日からはもう六月、早いものですね！

この週末は英検です。受験予定のみなさん、がんばってください。３級と準２級では出題内容の一部に変更があり、２級同様、英作文があります。みんな、一生懸命勉強していますから良い結果につながるといいなと思います。

Hario English School, as you probably know, does speech homework every year for all of our PLS students (elementary school age) who are in the 8th rank and above (in their 2nd year of classes and above). Each student has a different, unique speech that they write in Japanese around Golden Week and we turn into an English speech. It’s a long and careful process and we will give each student a speech pack with a speech, translation, word list, advice sheet and a CD recording from Alan or me. It culminates in a speech contest, for the best 35 or so speakers, in November, and in class mini speech contests for everyone around that time. We will give out the homework around Obon time but until then we will carefully make each speech. It’s always interesting for me to read the students speeches and learn a little about their lives. You have to translate the speeches accurately and so they sound natural, but also consider their level and try to make it achievable for each student to learn. I always brush up my Japanese doing this task and learn new words. The students get a chance to start and finish a big task, learn new vocabulary, practice public speaking skills, focus on pronunciation and tell their own story in English to everyone. It’s a big effort on everyone’s part but it’s something that not many English schools do (or do well) and it’s a great showcase for our school.

　ご存知かと思いますが、HARIO　イングリッシュ　スクールでは毎年８級以上（学習を初めて２年以上）のPLSクラスの生徒（小学生まで）全員を対象にスピーチホームワークの宿題を出しています。それぞれの生徒がめいめい、ゴールデン・ウイークくらいに日本語で書いた原稿を英語にしたものをスピーチします。時間をかけて慎重に進めた過程を経て、各生徒にスピーチホームワークのセットを渡します。その中にはスピーチの原稿、翻訳したもの、ワード・リスト、アドバイス・シート、それからアランか私の音声を録音したCDが入っています。11月に、スピーチ・コンテストに出場する３５人程度を選び、同じ頃、ミニ・スピーチ。コンテストを各クラスで行います。夏休みに、みんなに宿題を渡しますが、それまでにスタッフで慎重にその原稿を作ります。原稿を読んで、みんなの生活が垣間見ることができるのでわたしはいつも楽しみにしています。自然に聞こえるように、原稿は正確に訳されなればなりません。それと同時に発表者のレベルを考慮し、学習レベルの向上につながるようにする必要があります。この作業によって、わたしはいつも自分の日本語をブラッシュ・アップし、新しい言葉を学んでいます。生徒たちには大きな課題に取り組み、完成させ、語彙を増やし、人前でスピーチする訓練をし、発音を意識し、英語で自分を語るよいチャンスです。みんなにとって大変な努力を必要する内容ですが、英会話学校でこういった取り組みをするところ（あるいは力を入れてするところ）はそう多くありません。これが本校の大きな特色ともなっています。
