Hello everyone,

I’d like to announce to you all that my work with Hario will finish this summer. I’ve enjoyed meeting and working with all of our students. Everyone should be proud of their progress over the last year. It’s been a privilege to be a part of our students’ growth. Thank you for your support during my time here. I’ll miss our students, but I’ll carry memories and lessons from Hario with me wherever I go in the future.

Speaking of home, last week I watched a video with a Japanese friend, and the host of the show said some food was “nostalgic“.

My friend asked me what it meant, but when I tried to think of some examples, I realized that even though we’re the same age, we had totally different upbringings. So the things that are nostalgic for me would be totally different from her examples.

 

 

That made me wonder: what’s nostalgic for Japanese people my age?

For example, a lot of Americans consider peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to be nostalgic… How about Japanese childhood foods?

Some other examples would be common technology or media from earlier days. For me, Sony PlayStation controllers and games are nostalgic. How about you?

On the other hand, the music that’s nostalgic to me might not be common for someone my age- when I was a young child, I often rode around in my dad’s truck while he listened to cassette tapes of the Beatles, so I love their music and it’s really nostalgic to me. How about you?

みなさん、こんにちは。ジェラルドです。

ご存知の方もいると思いますが、私はこの夏でハリオを去り、アメリカに帰ることになりました。

この1年間、ハリオで皆さんと楽しい時間を過ごしました。皆さんのこの１年での英語の上達を非常に誇りに思います。

そして１年間、ありがとうございました。皆さんと会えなくなるのは寂しいですが、ハリオでの皆さんとの思い出はアメリカに持ち帰ります。

ところで先週、日本人の友人とあるビデオをみました。

そのテレビの司会者が、食べ物はノスタルジック（懐かしいもの）であったと言いました。

友人に、「ノスタルジックとはどういう意味か」聞かれました。何か、いい例を出そうとしたのですが、なかなか出ませんでした。

そこで気づいたのです。同じ年であっても、全く違うものを連想するだとうと。

なので疑問に思ったのです。私と同い年の日本人は何をノスタルジック（懐かしむ）に思うのだろうかと。

例えば、多くのアメリカ人はピーナッツバター、ジェリーサンドイッチと答えるかもしれません。

日本の皆さんはどうですか。

食べ物だけでなく、例えばプレイステーションなどもあります。

音楽では、ビートルズです。小さいとき、父の車にはビートルズのカセットが流れていました。
