Merry Christmas!

Hello everyone,

This is my last blog post of the year. I hope you enjoy the festivities of Christmas and the New Year. I got a box of gifts from my parents in Ireland this week. Although I’m staying in Japan this Christmas, my parents and I still exchanged presents. I sent a box to them last week. We can’t open any presents until Christmas Day, so they will stay under our tree until then. My daughter can’t wait to open hers! It’s traditional in Ireland that children receive gifts for Christmas, but unlike Japan, they don’t get money on New Year’s Day. “Otoshidama”, or New Year’s money is given to children from their relatives. While some children in Japan also get Christmas presents, it isn’t as common, and it’s only for young children. In Japan, Christmas is seen as a time for couples, but in Ireland it’s a day for the family to be together and have Christmas dinner. We usually have turkey, ham, roast potatoes, carrots, brussel sprouts and gravy for the main course, followed by Christmas pudding or Christmas cake for dessert. Because these cakes usually have raisins, and I hate raisins, I would have chocolate from my selection box instead. What’s a selection box? It’s a box containing many chocolate bars made by Cadbury, Ireland’s most popular chocolate company. It’s a popular Christmas gift in Ireland, and I have gotten one every year of my life. My parents still send me one every year. You can see in the picture all of the yummy bars inside. I’ve noticed in Japan they have chicken instead of turkey, and fried chicken is the prefered option. This all started when K.F.C. started a Christmas advertising campaign many years ago. It caught on fast, and now people have to reserve K.F.C. weeks in advance just to get it.

However you celebrate Christmas and the New Year, have a great holiday and see you next year.
