There was a general election in Ireland last Saturday. After all the votes have been counted, there is no clear winner. The three top parties all ended with almost the same amount of votes. This means that all three parties will have to work together to form a government with ministers from each party. It will take time for them to decide what’s best. We don’t even know who the next prime minister is! It could be anyone from those parties. A big issue for the next government is what to do about Brexit. The U.K. officially left the European Union at the end of January. Northern Ireland (part of the U.K.) isn’t in the E.U. anymore, but Ireland is. In the past, people could drive from Ireland to Northern Ireland freely. Many people work and live in both countries. But now, people are entering and leaving the E.U. when they cross the border, so they may have to stop, like at other E.U. borders. So far, there are no stops in place, and they are still negotiating what to do. Another big problem in Ireland recently is the price of housing and rent increasing too quickly. The cost of renting in Dublin has skyrocketed recently, making it the 8th most expensive city in the world to rent. When I lived there ten years ago, I paid about €600 per month to rent an apartment. Now, similar apartments cost about €2,000 to rent. Some of this is due to Ireland’s economy booming recently. People want the increase to stop so they can afford to buy or rent housing. We have to wait and see what the new government do about it. Whoever they are!

先週の土曜日、アイルランドでは選挙がありました。しかし投票集計しても、当選者は決定しませんでした。というのも、３つの党がほぼ同じぐらいの投票数だったからです。これは、３つの党が一緒に国を動かすことを意味します。これでは決定に時間がかかるようになりますし、首相を決めることもできません。アイルランド政府の今問題になっていることは、イギリスがEUを離脱したことにあります。先月、公式にイギリスはEUから離れました。アイルランドの北側はイギリスなので、EUではありませんが、アイルランドはEUに加盟しています。これまでは、アイルランドから北アイルランドまでは自由に行き来ができました。それぞれに働きにでかける人もたくさんいます。しかし今は、EUの加盟国とそうでない国になったので、簡単に行き来ができなくなります。この件については、まだ双方で話し合いが続いています。もう一つの問題は、アイルランドの最近起こっている住宅価格の高騰です。ダブリンは今、世界で８番目に家賃が高い場所になりました。私が10年前にダブリンでアパートに住んでいた時は、一カ月６００ユーロ（約７万）ぐらいでしたが、今は２０００ユーロ（２４万）です。これはアイルランドの経済の急成長が要因です。アイルランドの人々は、これを止め、住宅価格の高騰をおさえようとしています。ともかく、新しい政府がどのような策をとるのか、見守るしかありません。
