Hello everyone,

I hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing Obon vacation. Many people went travelling around Japan and abroad during the break. The roads and airports get very busy at this time of year. I avoided all the traffic and stayed home in Fuji this year. We still had an eventful week and took some day trips. We went to Mount Fuji Children’s World on Monday with my wife’s cousin and their children. Their two children are around my daughter’s age so they had lots of fun playing together. There is lots to do at Children’s World such as kayaking around a lake, playing in a giant spider web, riding horses, mini-golf, a labyrinth and a water slide for kids. It was a scorching hot, sunny day so we enjoyed cooling off in the water. The different parts of the park are very spread out, so it’s quite a long walk from one activity to another. This is okay in regular weather, but on a hot, humid day it’s tough going. We got tired walking pretty quickly. Luckily there is a shuttle bus that drives around the park, so we took a break in that. Being out in the sun for six hours meant that I had to be careful and use sun cream. I reapplied it several times, so I thought I was safe, but when we got home I noticed read patches on my arms and face. I  sun-burnt through the cream. I’m not sure how it happened, maybe the sweat washed off the cream. Luckily, the redness faded away after a few days and now it looks a bit tanned.  Irish people have some of the palest white skin in the world, so I burn very easily. It only takes about 40 minutes without cream. Then my skin becomes red and painful for about a week. That’s why I’m always careful in summer. Remember to wear sun cream outside, and enjoy the rest of the summer vacation.

みなさん、こんにちは。

お盆休みは楽しめましたか。この期間は、日本では旅行にでかける人がほとんどで、道路や空港は渋滞です。私はそれらから逃れるべく、今年は富士市で過ごしました。それでも充実した日を過ごし、何日かは外出しました。子供の国に妻の従妹とその子友達とでかけました。彼らと私の娘とは年が近いのでとても楽しんでました。カヤックをしたり、スバイダーウェブや、乗馬、ミニゴルフ、ウォータースライドなど。敷地が広くて次のアトラクションまでが遠く。普通の天気ならまだしも、この炎天下の中での移動は過酷でした。６時間もの間、陽の下にいたので、何度も日焼け止めをぬりました。大丈夫と思っていましたが、汗で流れていき、結局焼けてしまいました。我々アイルランド人は、肌が青白いのですぐに日焼けをします。４０分も日を浴びると焼けてしまい、肌が赤くなり痛みが一週間ぐらい続きます。なので夏はとても気をつかいます。皆さんも外出するときは、日焼け止めを忘れずに。残りの夏を楽しんでくださいね。
