Hello everyone,

What are your plans for the Obon holiday? Next week is one of the biggest national holidays of the year. I’ve been asking my students about their plans, and many of them are travelling to places all over Japan and abroad. The vacation starts with “Mountain Day” on August 11th. This holiday is only two years old. It began in 2016, and the Japanese government said it is for “opportunities to get familiar with mountains and appreciate blessings from mountains.” Many people are getting familiar with Mount Fuji at this time of year. We can see the climber’s lights as they scale the mountain at night. I did a night climb up Mount Fuji about 5 years ago. It was so difficult to climb all night with such thin air and no sleep. We made it to the top at about 5:30AM and it was worth it to see the sun rise in the morning. There is a saying to climb Mount Fuji once is a good idea, but to climb it twice is crazy. I’m happy with just climbing it once, for now. I wonder if my daughter wants to go to the top when she is older. I’m afraid I might have to go with her. The next part of the holiday is “Obon”, which is an old custom to honour the ancestors of families. The date varies year by year because it is based on the lunar calendar, but it is usually celebrated on August 15th. It has some similarities to Halloween in Ireland. Halloween began as a tradition celebrating spirits of ancestors returning to the world. That’s where the idea of dressing up as ghosts came from. Many people in Japan visit the graves of their families as their spirits are believed to return.

This week at Hario we celebrated Matt’s birthday with delicious cake and presents. I was scared when I thought he got a real samurai sword as a gift, but it turned out to be an umbrella! Happy birthday Matt!

みなさんこんにちは。

お盆休みの予定はｊ決まりましたか来週は一年のうちで最も大きな休みの一つです。

生徒たちに予定を尋ねると、多くの人が国内中や海外中へと旅行に行くようです

休みは8/11の「山の日」から始まりますその日はまだできてから二年しかたっていません。

2016年に始まり、日本の政府は「山について詳しくなり、山の恩恵に感謝する為の機会」と述べました。

たくさんの人が一年でこの機会に富士山について詳しくなることでしょう。夜には登山者の登る灯りが見られることでしょう。

私が夜に富士登山をしたのは5年前です眠らず空気の薄い中一晩中登るのはとても大変でした

私達は朝の5：30くらいに頂上にたどり着き、朝のご来光を見る事ができました

富士山に一度登るのは良いアイデアだと言われます。しかし二回ものぼるのはどうかしていると言われます。

私は一度だけでいまのところ満足です。

もしも娘が大きくなって頂上まで登りたいと言ったらどうしようかと思っています私も一緒に行かなければならないかもしれません・・・。

その次の祝日は「お盆」です。お盆は家族の先祖を祀る昔ながらの習慣です

太陰暦に基づいているためその日は年々異なります。しかしたいていは8月15日に祝われます。

アイルランドのハロウィーンに少し似ているところがあります。ハロウィーンは先祖の魂が世界へと帰ってくる事をお祝いする伝統として始まりました。それがゴーストの仮装をするアイデアの起源です。

日本の多くの人は家族の魂が帰ってくると信じて彼らのお墓参りをします。

今週ＨＡＲＩＯではマットの美味しいケーキとプレゼントでお誕生日をお祝いしました

誕生日プレゼントに本物の侍の刀をもらったと思ってびっくりしました。が、ただの傘でした！お誕生日おめでとう、マット！
