Happy Halloween at Hario!

Hello everyone,

Happy Halloween! Since last Thursday our special Halloween party classes have been taking place. They are in full swing now until the final day tomorrow. I’ve already seen some fantastic costumes from our students. There are many witches, pirates, vampires, princesses, minions and more. There have also been many original costumes we’ve never seen before. There was a costume of an anime character I didn’t know. It has yellow and black stripes, so at first I thought it was a bee. But then I saw a little eye on their shoulder, so I learned about this new character. The teachers here at Hario have some great costumes too. So don’t be scared to come in and see. Some of our students have been hesitant to come through the door. Halloween is the scariest time of the year. People all over the world dress up and go to parties. In the past, scary costumes were the preferred choice. But more recently, people have been wearing funny and crazy costumes instead. If you go to Shibuya in Tokyo on October 31st, or the previous weekend, you’ll see many weird and wonderful costumes. Some people put a lot of work into their costumes and they only get to wear it once a year! My wife helps to make my costume every year. I won’t say what it is yet, but I’m glad that many of our students recognise this character. All of our students are enjoying the special classes this week. We’re playing Halloween themed games with English. I think it’s a great way to learn about another country’s customs, and dressing up is fun for everyone.

There are a few old Halloween customs from my childhood that don’t take place much anymore. There is a special kind of fruitcake called “barmbrack” that people in Ireland eat on Halloween. There is a ring in the cake, and if it’s in your slice, it means you will get married soon! Another old Halloween tradition is holding “bonfires”, which is a big fire in a field. But that is less common these days due to fire safety.

However you celebrate Halloween, enjoy yourself!
