Hello everyone,

 

 How’s your week? Did you have any time off last week for the Silver week national holidays? I spent a relaxing time in Nagano. I hope you had a chance to relax and spend time with friends and family. I’ll remind you we have one more week of the autumn campaign. I taught a 2 year old girl her first lesson on Monday. At first, she was nervous, crying and clinging to her mother. However, by the end she had relaxed and was joining in with everything. For the final song, she sang the loudest in the class. It’s great to see such a change over just one lesson. The Eiken test is coming soon. Keep trying hard to the end, everyone! Also, the speech homework is past the halfway point now. We will decide soon who can speak at the speech contest. Good luck, everyone!

先週のシルバーウィークはいかがでしたか。

私は長野でリラックスした一週間を送りました。

９月も終わりに差し掛かり、HARIOの秋のキャンペーンも残すところあと一週間となりました。月曜日に２才のお子さんが体験にきました。最初はとても緊張して、泣いていて、お母さんにしがみついて離れませんでした。しかし、徐々に緊張がとけ、授業に参加するようになり、楽しんでいました。一回のレッスンでそのような成長、変化をみれたことがとても嬉しく思いました。

そして、英検がもうすぐやってきますね。最後まで頑張りましょう。

スピーチホームワークは後半にさしかかりました。もうすぐスピーチコンテスト出場者が選抜されます（１０月中旬）。

 I was shopping earlier today when  I saw this sign.

ところで今日の朝、ショッピングをしていたらこんなサインを見つけました。

 

 

There’s a mistake with the English on it. Do you know what it is?

It says, ‘Excited Price’, but perhaps it should say, ‘Exciting Price’. Actually, in the UK, in a sale, it’s more common to see signs like ‘Low Prices’ ‘Big Savings’ and ‘Bargain’. I don’t think I’ve seen the phrase, ‘Exciting Price’ so it sounds a little strange. 

 The grammar point is something that’s easy to mistake in English. You have two adjectives both formed from a root verb. Here the verb is ‘to excite’. As an adjective it’s either exciting or excited. In most cases, the ___ing form is a quality given to a thing.:

 

このサインには間違いがあります。皆さん、何かわかりますか？

ここには、”Excited Price”と書いてありますが、これを言うならば、”Exciting Price”と書くべきです。UKでは、”Low Price””Big Saving”や”バーゲン”などと言います。エキサイティングプライスも今までみたことはないので、こちらも聞いていて変な感じがしますが。

文法的にいうと、この”Excited Price”は、よくある英語の間違いです。

excitingもexcitedもどちらも形容詞です。ほとんの場合、形容詞の～ingという単語は、ある物の価値、質を表すときに使います。

 

It’s exciting to find low prices in a sale. 

Dunkirk is an interesting movie. 

I think social studies is boring.

 

セールで安いものを見つけること・・・は楽しい。

ダンケルクは・・・面白い映画です。

社会かの授業は・・・・つまらないと思います。

 

In those examples you have things – a sale price, a movie, a school subject – and the adjective with the ____ing form is describing a quality about it. 

 

上記の例の場合、ある物（名詞）を描写しているのでingの形が使われます。

 

 Now let’s look at _______ed for contrast. These adjectives usually describes a feeling caused by something:

 

There’s a sale on! I’m excited by all of these low prices.

I was moved by the film Dunkirk. It made me cry.

I was so bored in social studies today.

 

次の例では、edの形を使います。これらの形容詞は、何かによりひき起こされた感情を表します。

 

セールをやっている！値段がやすくてワクワクする。

ダンケルクの映画に感動した。なける映画だった。

今日の社会の授業はとてもつまらなかった。

 

 

Here, the ___ed adjectives are feelings caused by something – the sale prices, the movie and the subject from the other examples. In summary:

Something is ________ing. 

Someone is ______ed by something

 

I often ask my students, ‘How was school today?’ or How are you? and they sometimes confuse the two. To finish here’s a test.

 

よく生徒達に「学校はどうだった？」又は「ご機嫌いかが？」という質問をします。生徒達はつぎの二つと間違えます。みなさんは、どちらが答えだと思いますか。

 

1) How are you doing?

a) I’m tiring

b) I’m tired

 

2) How was school today?

a) It was tired

b) It was tiring.

 

The correct answers are 1-b and 2-b. Did you get them right?
