Hello everyone,

I hope you’re all doing well and feeling ready for a change of weather 🌷

I can’t wait for spring 🤩

But at the same time, I know a watched pot never boils.

This is kind of a funny phrase that means ‘if you wait impatiently for something to happen, it will feel as if it’s taking even longer’. Last week, I mentioned the proverb “A rolling stone gathers no miss.”

Someone came up with a longer version of the same proverb which says “A rolling stone gathers no moss, but it obtains a certain polish.” This expanded version has almost the opposite meaning ↔️

There are many proverbs in English that either got expanded, or their full version has been forgotten, so they might mean the opposite of what most people think 🤔

For example, you may have heard someone say “the early bird gets the worm!” as a way to encourage someone to be punctual.

However, a longer version says “The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.”

This quote could mean ‘it’s better to approach something with a plan than rushing in to do a bad job.’

I don’t know about you, but I find these kinds of sayings interesting. Read more commonly misused or forgotten proverbs here.I hope you learn something interesting.

春が待ち遠しいです。

しかし同時にa watched pot never boilsだということを知っています。

これは「何かが起こるのを待ちきれないとき、時間が長く感じる」という意味の面白いことわざです。

先週は”A rolling stone gathers no miss.”ということわざを紹介しました。

これの長いほうのことわざを思いついた人がいて、それは”A rolling stone gathers no moss, but it obtains a certain polish.”というものでした。このことわざにも大体反対の二つの意味があります。

英語にはたくさんのことわざがあり、それが派生したり、もとの完全なことわざが忘れられ去られたりするので、反対の意味があることもあるのかもしれません。

例えば、 “the early bird gets the worm!”という時間に正確な人になるように促すためのことわざを聞いたことがある人がいるかもしれません。

しかしこの長いバージョンのものに”The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.”があります。
