Hello everyone,

It’s the coldest time of the year. I noticed the temperature dipped below freezing at night last week. While that’s very cold for Fuji, it’s quite mild compared to many other parts of Japan. There was snow in many areas north of here, and inland areas too. Niigata was covered in snow last week. We’re lucky to be in an area that gets mild winters. I’ve only seen snow once in my five years here in Fuji. Even then it only snowed for a few hours and disappeared quickly. In Ireland, it doesn’t snow much in winter, usually once or twice. It doesn’t stay long either and is usually washed away by rain. People are surprised when I tell them this because Ireland is farther north than Hokkaido. The Gulf Stream is responsible for this. It is the movement of warm air from the Caribbean, across the Atlantic Ocean to Ireland that gives it mild winters. The rest of the world at this latitude is covered in snow every winter. Only the U.K. and Ireland are that far north and snow free for most of the winter. I remember the last time Ireland had a lot of snow in 2010. We aren’t used to having this kind of weather in Dublin, so most people didn’t go to work. They were told not to drive on the icy roads, because nobody has winter tires on their cars there. There was a shortage of salt in the country, so they couldn’t even put it on the roads! It shows how unprepared Ireland was for snowfall. I saw cars unable to start at traffic lights. They were standing still and spinning their wheels. In snowy areas of Japan, however, people are well prepared with winter tyres. They shovel snow from their driveways in the morning too, something I’ve never had to do.

みなさん、こんにちは。一年で一番寒い時期ですね。先週の夜は、凍る寒さでした。今、富士はこんな寒さですが、それでも富士は、日本の中で気候が穏やかで温暖な土地です。日本の北陸、東北の地方は大雪です。富士市に住んでいてよかったなと思います。富士市に住んで雪をみたのは、一度だけです。それでも数時間しか降らず、すぐに溶けてしまいました。

アイルランドでも雪はそんなに降りません。一年に一度か二度です。そして降っても雨で流されてしまうほどです。このことを話すと、皆とても驚きます。というのも、アイルランドが北海道よりもさらに北にあるからです。雪が降らない理由は、メキシコ湾の暖流にあります。メキシコ湾の暖流がフロリダなどを通ってヨーロッパ、そしてアイルランドに流れます。2010年にアイルランドに大雪が降りました。アイルランドの人々は雪が降ることになれていないので、ほとんどの人が仕事に行きませんでした。誰もスノウタイアを付けていないので、凍った道路は運転しないようにいわれていました。塩が不足しているアイルランドでは、道路に塩をまくこともできませんでした。当時、信号機の前で発進できない車をみました。タイヤがスピンしていました。日本の雪国では、タイヤなど人々が雪に対する準備ができていますね。
