It’s September, and the summer vacation is finally over for all of our students. Many of them have big tests today and tomorrow, so good luck to all of you. It was a busy vacation for all of them, with summer homework, summer classes and school club activities all through the month.

I went to Tokyo last Sunday. I rarely go there even though it’s only an hour by shinkansen. It’s a beautiful city, and I think I should take opportunities to go there more often. I’ll meet my friends and brother there in the middle of the month so I’m looking forward to that. Last Sunday we took a bus tour to Tokyo Tower. Built in 1958, it was the tallest structure in Japan for over 50 years, until the Skytree was built. It has a great view from the observation deck. There is a glass floor you can stand on and look straight to the ground. It’s scary to stand on the glass and look down about 200 meters, but my daughter was jumping on it! Tokyo Tower is 332 meters high. The highest building in my home city of Dublin is 79 meters! There is a tall sculpture in the center of Dublin that is 120 meters high, but people can’t go inside. It’s called “The Spire”, it looks like a giant needle and you can only look at it from the outside. What do you think of it from the photo? It had many critics when it was first built, but it’s an easy way to know where you are in Dublin city. Dublin’s skyline is low because it’s such a historical city that many of the buildings are old. Now that the economy is booming again, there are some high buildings planned, but I think it will be a long time before Dublin has a skyscraper like Tokyo.

みなさん、こんにちは。

夏休みが終わり９月になりました。学校が始まって生徒達は、今日や明日に大きなテストがあるようですね。がんばってくださいね。生徒達は皆、宿題や講習、部活に忙しくしていましたね。

私は先週の日曜日に東京へ行きました。新幹線でたった１時間ですが、東京に行くのは久しぶりでした。とても美しい都市です。もっとたくさん行くべきかなと思いますが。今月の中旬にも、弟や友人を迎えに東京に行きます。彼らに会えるのがたのしみです。それはともかく、私は今回、東京タワーへいくバスツアーに参加しました。東京タワーは１９５８年、約５０年以上前に日本一高いタワーとして建てられました。展望台からの眺めは素晴らしいもので、ガラス張りの床にたつと、下までみることができます。２００メートルもあるので、とても怖いです。でも私の娘はそこでジャンプしてました。東京タワーは３３２メートルあります。私の故郷のアイルランド、ダブリンで一番高い建物は７９メートルです。中心街に高い彫刻があり、それは120メートルありますが、中に入ることおはできません。「スパイアー」と名付けられたその彫刻は、まるで巨大な針みたいです。写真↑がそうです。どう思いますか。この建物。色んな意見があるかと思いますが、ダブリンのシンボルとしては、目立つのでいいかもしれません。ダブリンの建物は歴史的景観の維持もあり、たかくありませんし、古い建物ばかりです。しかし、現在は経済が良くなり、高い建物の建築が計画されています。それでもダブリンが東京のような高層ビルをもつ日が来る日は、まだまだ先だと思います。
