Congratulations Japan!

Hello everyone,

What a weekend it was for the Rugby World Cup! Japan pulled off a huge upset and beat Ireland last Saturday. I was there to witness the shock result. I went to Ecopa with three of my Irish friends. My parents and brother went back to Ireland last week, so three friends remained in Japan. We took the shinkansen from Fuji around midday. It was completely full of Irish people! We barely managed to squeeze on to it and there were hundreds of people standing all through the carriage. It was so full because many of the fans were staying in Tokyo, and made the day trip to Ecopa for the match. We got off the shinkansen at Kakegawa station, and changed to another completely full local train to Aino station. Once we got there we spent some time chilling out in the hospitality area near the station. It was amazing to see so many Irish people in one place in Japan. I even met someone I know by coincidence! There was a great atmosphere there, it was like a giant party. We walked to the stadium to watch the match kick off at 4:15 PM. It was a good time for a match because I got this nice photo of the evening sky above the stadium. Ireland began strong and looked like they would win comfortably for the first quarter. They took the lead with an early try, and led 12 – 3 after 20 minutes. Then everything changed. Japan’s strength and confidence grew when they brought on captain Leitch as a substitute. In the second half Japan dominated the game, and scored tries and penalty kicks to win 19 – 12. When Japan scored the try that put them in the lead the noise from the crowd was louder than I’ve ever heard in my life. 60,000 people went crazy and were cheering wildly. I was sad and disappointed at Ireland’s poor performance, but it was nice to see the Japanese fans and players happy with a well-deserved win. My Irish friend asked me “How do you say congratulations in Japanese?” I think both teams will qualify from the group. Well done Japan!
