Hello everyone!

I hope you are all staying warm during the last few weeks of winter. It seems warm during the day but then night comes and you wish you had a bigger jacket! Also best of luck to all the students during their exams and to the students that will be moving to a new school in April!

One thing my students seem surprised at is when I answer their question, “what’s your favourite comic book?” with Spider-Man. It seems that most of them see Spider-Man as a movie and video game character, not a comic book one! Comic books are very popular in Japan and there are so many that are popular which are very different from each other. Slam Dunk is not at all like One Piece!

Now comic books in the west are very much dominated by Super Hero books. Like Spider-Man, Batman, The Avengers, etc. You can find comics of many different genres but the most popular ones (maybe even the top 50!) are all super hero books. When I was young I loved reading comics. You could often find me hiding under a fort of blankets and pillows reading the newest Spider-Man comic or a classic Hulk book from 30 years before! I still have many comics from that time that I would love to read again.

みなさん、こんにちは。マットです。

冬の最後の数週間、皆さんが暖かく過ごしていることを願っています。日中は暖かいですが、夜になるとジャケットが必要です。

また、試験中のすべての生徒と、4月から新しい学校生活が始まる生徒達に幸運を祈ります。

私の生徒たちが驚くのは、「好きな漫画は何ですか？」という質問に私が「スパイダーマン」答えたときです。

彼らのほとんどは、スパイダーマンを漫画本ではなく、映画やビデオゲームのキャラクターと思っているようです！

コミックは日本でとても人気がありますが、どれもお互いに大きく異なります。たとえばスラムダンクはワンピースと全く違います。

一方で西洋の漫画本はスーパーヒーローの本の人気が一番です。スパイダーマン、バットマン、アベンジャーズなどのように。さまざまなジャンルの漫画を見つけることができますが、最も人気のあるもの（おそらくトップ50）はすべてスーパーヒーローの本です。小さい頃は漫画を読むのが好きでした。 30年前、最新のスパイダーマンコミックや古典的なハルクの本を毛布や枕の下に隠れて読んでいました。

その時の漫画はまだ持っていて、また読みたいと思っています。
