Chocolate and crisps!

Hello everyone,

I hope you enjoyed the warm, sunny weather last weekend. I t really felt like summer! I went to the Performing Arts Festival in Chuo Park. It was really interesting to see all of the traditional Japanese dance performances. Most of the acts had one or two huge flags being waved behind the dancers. The traditional costumes and flags were so colourful. There were many stalls selling food and drink. I cooled down with my first “kakigori” of the year. Kakigori is Japanese for shaved ice flavored with syrup or sweetener, often condensed milk. They are very popular at summer festivals here. If you walk around at a festival you will see people of all ages eating one with a special spoon-straw hybrid. The summer here is so hot that eating ice is one of the best ways to cool down. We don’t have shaved ice in Ireland, but ice-cream cones sell well over there in summer. The most common ice-cream in Ireland is a “99”, which is a soft ice-cream in a cone, with a “flake” chocolate bar stuck in it. I can’t find flake bars here in Japan. They are delicious, so I always buy some when I travel back home. Irish chocolate bars have become popular among my Japanese relatives. When I moved here I started to miss bars like Cadbury crunchie, flake, and dairy milk. The Cadbury company is Irelands biggest chocolate producer and they don’t sell here in Japan. Recently, I received a parcel in the mail from my parents with many Easter eggs. These are big chocolate eggs with two bars inside. So I’ve been eating so much chocolate this week I think I’m getting fat. I also got some “tayto” crisps in the parcel. “Tayto” is Ireland’s most popular potato chip brand. In Ireland we call potato chips “crisps”. We call french fries “chips”. It gets confusing for Americans who come to Ireland and get fries when they ask for chips. There are lots of differences between American and U.K./Irish English. I don’t know where our students might travel in the future so I like teaching the differences.

Cadbury company
