This week, I thought a good topic for Hario’s blog would be how to learn English during a conversation. It can be awkward to stop a conversation to ask a question, but it’s usually even stranger to continue without understanding.

The reason this topic’s on my mind is because a student recently complimented my colleague, Nao (Ms. Yamashita), after hearing us speaking to each other. I’ve noticed that Nao is really good at asking questions to find out about colloquial expressions, like the ones I sometimes use. So, let’s consider some other helpful questions ☕️

 

Use these questions when you don’t understand what someone said at all:

1) Could you please repeat that?

2) Could you please speak more slowly?

3) Could you please speak more loudly?

 

Use these questions when you can repeat the word, but don’t understand the meaning or the use at all:

1) How do you spell …?

2) What does … mean?

3) Is there another way to say …?

4) How do you say … in Japanese?

 

Use these questions when you know a word or phrase, but don’t understand the way someone’s using it:

1) What do you mean by …?

2) Is it common to say …?

3) In what situation should I say …?

今週の私のブログは、会話からどのように英語を学ぶかです。

会話を止めて質問をするのは難しいですよね。

私の同僚のナオは、会話を止めずに質問をするのがうまいです。

例えば、こんな時、皆さんは次のどのフレーズをいったらいいと思いますか。

 

①相手の言っていることがわからないとき

1) Could you please repeat that?

2) Could you please speak more slowly?

②話している単語の意味やスペルがわからないとき。

1) How do you spell …?

2) What does … mean?

3) Is there another way to say …?

4) How do you say … in Japanese?

 

③単語やフレーズの意味はわかったけれど、どんな時に使ったらいいかたずねるとき。

1) What do you mean by …?

2) Is it common to say …?

3) In what situation should I say …?
