Canadian Slang

Hello everyone!

I hope you are all doing well studying for your tests and exams! It’s a busy time of year but make sure to relax and give your brain some rest. Go out and enjoy a Sakura festival!

This week I wanted to talk about something a few of my students have asked about, Canadian slang. Do Canadians have their own slang words? Yes of course! While our language and culture is similar to our American neighbours, we have our own ways of saying a few things. The most famous of which is “Eh?”. Many Canadians use “Eh?” at the end of a statement, just like the Japanese do with “Desu ne/Ne”. An example would be, “It’s cold outside, eh?”.

Next is the word “Loonie”. A Loonie is the nickname for our $1 (1 Dollar) coin. Why is it called a Loonie? Because it has a picture of a bird called a loon on it. The loon is famous for it’s unique song. You can hear it here:

たとえば「It’s cold outside, eh?」
