Baseball is back…maybe

Hello everyone!

We all know that Covid-19 has caused a lot of problems around the world. People have gotten sick or even died, businesses have shut down, travel has been restricted and tons of events and festivals have been cancelled. One thing that has been cancelled or postponed are professional sports.

The Major League Baseball season usually starts in April and is played until October. It is now nearing the end of June and plans have not been set just yet to start the season. The Players Union and the owners have been going back and forth on how to organize a shortened season. Many people are upset with the players but are forgetting that Professional Baseball doesn’t make any money for the owners without them! The owners are asking the players to play over 70 games but changing their salary to pay for only 50 of those games. Also the owners aren’t the ones taking the risk of playing during a pandemic!

On the other hand, fans are also upset at owners for releasing thousands of Minor League players from their contracts during the pandemic. These players make very little money, just about the minimum wage in many places in America. What a mess!

世界中でコロナの影響が広がっています。沢山の感染者、死者をだし、ビジネスはストップし、外出は制限され、多くのイベントが中止になりました。その一つにプロ野球もあります。

メジャーリーグは通常４月に開幕し１０月で閉幕します。もうすでに６月下旬ですが、まだシーズンは始まっていません。選手協会とオーナーたちなどが今シーズンをどうするかの話し合いをしてきました。多くの人が選手たちに腹を立てていますが、プロ野球は選手たちなしではお金は生まれません。オーナーたちは選手たちに７０ゲーム以上の試合をするよう命じていますが、給与は５０ゲーム分しか支払われません。またオーナーは、コロナの時期に試合をしても自分たちは危険にはなりません。
