Hello everyone,

Many of our students have started going back to school this week. Some of them have staggered days, so every student goes every second day, which means there is a smaller group of people there. This shows that there are still measures in place to stop the spread of corona virus. All the shops have social distance markers to wait at, and plastic sheets to protect staff. So it will still be some time before things get back to normal. Our students have been at home for so long that many of them are actually happy to go to school. In Ireland, they can’t go to school until September, so all of the students have to study at home. The big test at the end of high school is called the Leaving Certificate. Unlike Japan, everyone in Ireland takes the same test, regardless of what university they want to go to. You can choose what subjects to take, and the difficulty of the test. If you take the more difficult version, you can get more points. Your total points are calculated from your best 6 test scores. Everyone in Ireland gets their test scores and points on the same day in summer, and those points determine which university course you can take. This year, the Leaving Certificate has been cancelled. Teachers in Ireland have been asked to give their students points based on their performance at school throughout the year. I wonder if they can remember all of their students! Hopefully things will be back to normal when our students in Japan take their university exams next year. Sometimes it’s difficult to find the motivation and self-discipline to study hard at home when there are so many distractions. That’s why many students go to the library to study. It stops you from watching TV or using your phone. Good luck to all of our students who are going back to school!

みなさん、こんにちは。アランです。多くの今週から再開しました。それでも密集をさけるために、分散登校で一日おきに学校へ行っています。まだまだコロナウィルスには油断ができません。すべての店では、ソーシャルディスタンスがとられ、レジを待つ立ち位置がきめられていたり、レジにはお客とスタッフの間にプラスチックシートがかけられています。まだ通常に戻るにはまだ時間がかかりそうです。生徒達は、外出自粛をしていたので、学校にいけるのがうれしいようです。アイルランドでは、９月まで学校は開きません。９月まで自宅学習です。アイルランドでは高校が終わるときにリービングCertificateと呼ばれる重要なテストがあります。日本とは違って、アイルランドではどの大学にいくかに関わらず、全員が同じテストをうけます。どの科目か、難しさの度合いなど受けるテストを選べます。難しいテストをやると、高いポイントがもらます。点数が高かった６つの科目の合計が、最終的なポイントになります。アイルランドでは皆がこのテストをうけ、この点数によりどの大学に進学するかを決めます。今年は、このテストがコロナのために中止になりました。多くの生徒が先生に、自分の評価が何点ぐらいなのかを問い合わせています。私は、全部の先生が生徒の名前を憶えているとは思えないので、信ぴょう性がないと思うのですが。日本の入試の時には、日常が戻っていることを願っています。自宅での勉強はモチベーションを維持すること、自分に厳しくすることなど様々な難しさを与えます。なので多くの生徒が図書館へ行っています。これでテレビや携帯などの誘惑にまけなくて済みます。ということで、皆さん、再開された学校を楽しんで頑張ってくださいね
