Last Sunday was the longest day of the year, June 21st. It’s called the summer solstice and is the day when we have the most daylight hours, and the sun set at about 7:30PM. In Ireland the sun sets at 9:30PM on this day! Ireland is so far north that the summer and winter months have a big variation in daytime length. On The shortest day, December 21st, the sun sets at about 3:30PM, so it’s a very short and dark day. There was a solar eclipse here on Sunday. We were hopeful to be able to see it because it was sunny earlier in the day. However when the eclipse began here in the afternoon it was a little cloudy. Eclipses are rare events all over the world, where the moon crosses in front of the sun. I remember when I was younger there was a big one in Ireland. One sunny day it suddenly became dark for a few minutes. I wonder what people thought of that in ancient times.

So it was the longest day of the year and there was a solar eclipse, do you know what else was special about last Sunday? It was also Father’s Day. Interestingly, Mother’s Day is different in Ireland and Japan. It falls on a Sunday in March in Ireland, but in May in Japan. But Father’s Day is the same day in both countries, the third Sunday in June. My daughter made a craft for me at school to celebrate. She drew a picture of me on it. I think it looks just like me!

みなさん、こんにちは。アランです。

先週の日曜日、６月２１日は一年で一番日が長い日で、日が落ちたのは７時半でした。アイルランドは、なんと９時半に日が落ちました。北に位置するアイルランドは、夏と冬では日の長さが大きく違います。一番短いのは、１２月21日で、３時半に日が落ちます。

日曜日は日食でした。晴れていたので見られるかなと思いましたが、午後には曇り始めました。日食は月が太陽の前を横切るときに起きる貴重な現象です。子供の頃、アイルランドでみた日食をおぼえています。ある晴れた日に突然暗くなりました。あの時周りの人は何が起こったか解っていたのでしょうか。

先週の日曜日はまた、父の日でもありました。アイルランドと日本では、母の日が違います。アイルランドは３月で日本は５月です。しかし父の日は同じなんです。娘が幼稚園で作った工作をくれました。その中に、私の絵が描かれていました。私、そっくりでした。
