A Relaxing Golden Week

Hello everyone,

I hope you had an enjoyable Golden Week. I’ve been asking our students what they got up to last week. Many of them visited relatives or travelled somewhere. It is well known that Golden Week is one of the busiest times of the year to travel in Japan. The highways can be full of traffic, so I decided to stay local this year. I went to the Horse Festival in Fujinomiya and I played tennis for three days. It was hot and sunny, so I got tired very quickly. I’m not as fit as I used to be when I was younger! The summer humidity hasn’t come yet, however, so I had fun playing. I reserved the court for three hours each day. My arm was very stiff and painful the next day. I played a lot of tennis when I was younger, so it was nice to play again. It took a while to get back into it, but my swing came back naturally after a while. As an Irish person being out in the sun for three hours I have to be very careful of sunburn. In the past I have burned in as little as 30 minutes! I wore lots of sun cream last week, so I was fine, and I even got a little tan. Unlike Japanese people, many Irish people want darker, more tanned skin. They often use sunbeds and many women use false tan cream. Many Irish people spend too long in the sun and get burned instead! There is a big difference between getting a bronze “sun-tan”, and getting red “sun-burn”. I was surprised to find that there is only one word used for both in Japanese, “hiyake”. For the rest of my Golden Week I went to the park and did some shopping around Fuji. It was a relaxing break and I feel well rested and ready to get back into working again.

Here at Hario we are busy preparing for Hario Camp 2018. There are only 11 more days to go! It’s going to be another exciting and fun camp this year at Asagiri. There are many fun games, cooking, a campfire and more in store. Let’s make some wonderful memories!

楽しいゴールデンウィークを過ごせたでしょうか。

生徒の皆さんに先週何をしたか聞いたりしています。多くの生徒さんは親戚のもとを訪ねたり、どこかへ旅行をしたようです

ゴールデンウィークは日本を旅行するのに一年で最も混雑する時期の一つである、ということが良く知られています。

高速道路は渋滞するので、私は今年は地元で過ごすことにしました

富士宮の馬祭りに行き、3日間はテニスをしました暑くて晴れており、すぐに疲れてしまいました若い時のようには体がついていきません！

夏のムシムシした感じはまだやってきていません。とにかく楽しく遊びました1日3時間でテニスコートは予約しました。私の腕は翌日ぱんぱんで痛くなってしまいました。もっと若い時はたくさんテニスをしました。なのでまたできて良かったです。感覚を取り戻すのに少しかかりましたが、しばらくすると自然な振り方に戻りました。アイルランド人が3時間外で太陽を浴びるので、日焼けに十分注意しなければなりません。昔たったの30分で焼けたことがあります！先週はたくさん日焼け止めを塗ったため大丈夫でした。ちっとも黒くなりませんでした。日本人とはちがって多くのアイルランド人はもっと黒く、もっと日に焼けたいと思っています。よく日焼け用のベッドを使ったり、多くの女性が偽の日焼けクリームを使っています。多くのアイルランド人が太陽を長く浴びすぎて、その代わりに赤く日焼けをします！健康的に日に焼ける “sun-tan”と赤く日に焼ける”sun-burn”では大きな違いがあります。日本語には両方を表わす言葉が「日焼け」一つだけであるということを知り驚きました。残りのゴールデンウィークは公園へ行ったり、富士周辺で買い物をしました。ゆったりとした休日で、とても休まり、また働く準備がよく出来たような気がします。
